Qatar

Mostly unknown to the outside world, this small peninsula (and islands) which cover an area of about 11000 square kilometers is steadily becoming popular world wide for quality leisure, business, education, sport and MICE facilities.

Qatar is located halfway down the west coast of the Persian Gulf , and can be reached in a bout 6-8 hours direct flight from most European cities, with a time difference of merely 1-2 hours depending on the season. The capital city Doha is well connected to Europe by state run prestigious Qatar Airways, and many other international carriers.

Though Qataris traditionally sought their living from the sea, Oil, discovered in 1930 and now gas, has turned Qatar into one of the richest countries in the world on a per head population basis.

A late entrant into the tourism map, Qatar is, no doubt, set to be the destination for the future in the region.

Doha City Centre

With a brief to reflect the growing spirit of Qatar and its emerging significance in regional affairs, GHD architects created an exciting retail and entertainment complex of international standard.

The masterplan for the multi-use City Centre project, developed with Davenport Campbell, provides 129,000 square metres of retail space over five levels, a 400 room four-star hotel, four office towers, four residential towers and 2,500 car parking spaces.

The retain and entertainment mall provides a broad range of family-based activities – in department stores, specialty retail outlets, hypermarket, food courts, entertainment area, cinema complex, ice skating rink, bowling alley, and children's water sports.

The design team has developed distinctive glazed roof and facade systems to avoid the sense of enclosure experienced in large retail complexes. Through the careful integration of fabric sail structures the facade is sheltered from the intense sun. The need for spatial flexibility has called for clear-span space frame structures for the entertainment and cinema complex.

The project was constructed under a fast track contract with the GHD team working closely with the Construction Manager, Gettco Contracting.

Other GHD projects in the region include expansion of the Doha and Al Ain Airports, the World Trade Centre in Algiers , Algeria , and the Al Sulaiti tower and a 15-storey residential complex in Doha .
